  Respite: for families

Families typically pay for in-home support or respite care through a combination of sources - e.g., personal funds; federal, state, or local public funds; private agencies or service organizations (i.e., Easter Seals, Alzheimer's Association, United Cerebral Palsy, ALS Association, etc.). The chart below provides a local contact office for possible public funding sources to pay for some in-home support or respite care services. Eligibility rules and availability of funding for each program can change. Contact the local offices listed directly for up-to-date information.

For families who do not qualify for public funds, the chart below provides other possible options from private agencies or service organizations, and volunteer services in communities across Oregon. Volunteer services could be part of a volunteer organization, or a family advocacy network, or a disability organization.

 

Options provided by private agencies or organizations could be financial assistance for family caregivers of specific age or disability groups. Options could also be free events for families, where there are activities for children and informatin sharing or training for parents. These services are often specific to the needs within each county, or region. Check with the local offices listed in the chart above for additional local resources specific to your county.

 

Also check with your private health insurance organization, as respite care may also be included in the coverage.

 

Included in the chart below is a listing of networks and coalitions across Oregon that can assist families to find available supports in their own community. Support could be a cooperative system where families can donate and share respite time, or group meetings where parents can share resources while their children are being engaged in learning activities, etc.... Remember, respite means different things for different people. For some, it could mean just being able to sit and read alone for a couple of hours; for others, it could mean connecting with other caregivers to share information and support each other.
