Grasshopper numbers continued to increase during 2011. While other western states are not experiencing this buildup, grasshopper densities in Oregon are reaching levels not seen since the 1980's. The 2011 report is now available for viewing and downloading. Report Summary Full report (pdf, 1.7 MB) Maps In general economic densities (8 or more grasshoppers per square yard) were found more often in eastern Oregon this year than in 2010. The sites with economic levels of grasshoppers in 2010 had even higher numbers in 2011. There were at least a few landowners who attempted their own grasshopper suppression. Due to limited resources, ODA and APHIS only had one small suppression program. It is difficult to accurately predict where grasshopper outbreaks will occur because they depend greatly on climatic conditions at the time of hatch and early development. We recommend that landowners and land managers be prepared for a much worse outbreak in Oregon in 2012. Land managers should closely monitor for grasshopper hatch in the early spring of 2012. Site Specific Environmental Assessments for 2012 and the previous three years are available on ODA's website. For further information or resources please contact Paul Blom at pblom@oda.state.or.us
