Peach mosaic virus regulations
Introduction
Peach mosaic virus (PMV) is a destructive plant disease of peach. Symptoms of PMV include fruit deformity, leaf mosaic and stunting. It can be transferred to healthy plants by grafting or vectored by the peach bud mite, Eriophyes insidiosus. Native to North America, the virus was first observed in Texas in 1931. PMV has since been reported in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah.

Regulations
A quarantine was established by the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) against peach mosaic virus in 1974 under the Oregon Administrative Rule (OAR) 603-052-0117 to stop the continued spread of the disease. Areas under quarantine include Arizona; California (Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego counties); Colorado (Delta, Garfield, Mesa, Montezuma, and Montrose counties); New Mexico; Oklahoma (Alfalfa, Bryan, Johnston, and Woods counties); Texas (Brown, Callahan, Camp, Cherokee, Comanche, Dallas, Eastland, El Paso, Erath, Fisher, Floyd, Freestone, Hale, Harrison, Hudspeth, Jones, Limestone, Palo Pinto, Runnels, San Saba, Smith, Tarrant, Taylor, Upshur, and Young counties); Utah (Grand and Washington counties).

Commodities covered include all peach, nectarine, apricot, almond, plum, Prunus tomentosa (Manchu cherry), P. besseyi (W. sand cherry) and pruned trees or parts of these trees for or capable of propagation except fruit pits. Commodites covered under quarantine are prohibited from entry Oregon.

All commodities covered in quarantine rule originating outside of the quarantine areas must be accompanied by a certificate stating that the commodities were produced in an area free of PMV. Commodities shipped in violation of this quarantine will be refused entry into this state and immediately sent out of this state or destroyed under departmental supervision by the person receiving the commodity. A special research permit for quarantine commodities is available through the ODA. Written applications for research permits must be approved by the ODA. Movement of quarantine commodities will be subject to any conditions or restrictions stipulated in the permit.
